"the long and short of it" consisted of five dances performed consecutively: "Nudge 1"; "Corral (Kathleen's Enigma)"; "Nudge 2"; "Nudge 3"; and "Thread (return)". It was the second collection to arise from my two-year-long project within which we generated relatively short small group pieces growing from dissimilar choreographic underpinnings, weaving variously-composed blends of set and improvised moving.
These pieces were about us dancing together, in the present…and ultimately they sang their own mysteries. The underpinning was my ongoing interest in the conversation between what’s planned and what arises/is assembled in the moment, and my curiosity about how our means of organizing things shape, color, extend, and focus the dancing we find to progress along the way. And in a wider sense, how we can employ a fluid and responsive skill set to engage and enliven the variety of situations we find ourselves in.
Choreography by David Appel, with the other dancers
