A physical defect often has a negative effect on sexual attraction. This is in part determined culturally: the prevailing concepts in society nestle themselves in the hypothalamus: that part of the brain that controls sexual attraction. It also has biological roots: Every human being unconsciously seeks to improve his species through reproduction, the so-called natural selection. He or she will search for the partner that appears most suitable for the creation of healthy and successful children. Since 2007, all pregnant woman are offered the possibility of conducting screening tests in order to establish whether the unborn child has defects. The number of women that decides to interrupt their pregnancy after the discovery of such a defect has since doubled.
