Patrolling Princeton takes on new meaning this summer...that's when Lieutenant John Howell of the Princeton police department says foot patrols on Mercer Street will begin...because the department now has the manpower to do it.
"We’re hoping to do it all summer long. It won't be an every day thing. It may be that we do it a couple of days one week, three or four days the next, and we may do it everyday one week, and it may just be one day.”
"Business owners along Mercer Street feel that this is a step in the right direction for the revitalization of downtown Princeton."
"Any kind of presence that they can show downtown would be helpful. We have customers who are afraid to come downtown because they say that there is activity going on that they don't want to be a part of."
Police want to assure residents that the additional patrols will not take away from other parts of the city. They'll continue their regular rounds throughout Princeton.
"You know. We're going to try to focus a little bit of extra patrol right there on mercer street as far as the foot patrol and the motorized units as well. And try to curb some of the problems before they get started this summer.”
