MUSEUMS AT NIGHT Commission by Culture 24 Connect 10 projects, and the Discovery Museum and The Late Shows.
May 18th 2013, 7-11pm
Size: 8M x 1.5M in diameter
Materials: coloured paper, 2,000+ recycled plastic bottles aluminum ring, rope, nylon thread, Newcastle Discovery Museum Great Hall and The Late Show museum visitors.
Description: The Museum collected recycled bottles that were then washed, cleaned and transformed into sculptural units .On the evening of May 18th, visitors to the Museum from 7-10pm were invited to take an empty recycled bottle and select a coloured piece of paper that correlated to where they were from. Visitors could select more then one colour if they identified with more then one location. The options were as follows:
Gold: Newcastle. Red: Gateshead. Pink: North Tynside, Purple: South Tynside, Blue: Wider North East, Light Blue: Rest of the Kingdom and Dayglow Yellow: Another corner of the world.
Then they were asked to write a word or phrase on what home meant to them and place their message in the bottle. Finally they were invited to thread the bottle onto the sculpture. At 10:30pm, the giant sculpture that held about 2,000+ plastic bottles was hoisted in the Great Hall of the Museum, and illuminated as a chandelier.
The work explored the idea of migration as Newcastle has a big history of several waves of migrants coming to the area over the last hundreds of years.
