Hurricane Sandy victims whose homes were damaged or destroyed face a lengthy and often frustrating process to have their claims paid.
Flood damage is not typically covered by homeowners insurance policies. The National Flood Insurance Program, run by FEMA, handles the claims through private insurers . The insurers sell the policies and hire the adjusters to assess the damage.
New York attorney Charles Fine says "Banks and insurance carriers place an array of hoops homeowners must jump through in order to have claims paid." Fine added "the banks cause the most problems for homeowners in this process. In order to have funds released homeowners need cooperation from their lender."
The sheer number of claims insurers are processing also slows everything down. if you've tried to arrange a mortgage modification, this may seem similar. Forms are often lost and need to be resubmitted. Homeowners also complain that they receive conflicting information from everyone involved.
