The American University of Sharjah (AUS) will participate in Shell Eco-Marathon Asia for the very first time in July 2013. The AUS team will compete in diesel category and take part in Shell Eco-Marathon Asia. The event will take place at the Sepang Ping International Circuit in Kuala Lumpur from July 4-7, 2013. The aim is to go the longest distance on just 1 liter of diesel.
What is Shell Eco-Marathon?
Shell Eco-marathon is an annual event that challenges student teams from around the world to design, build and test ultra-energy-efficient vehicles. The goal of the competition is to go the farthest using the least amount of energy. The event takes place in the Americas, Europe and Asia.
Different Categories in Shell Eco-Marathon:
The teams can choose which category they want to participate in, either in the prototype or the urban concept category. In each category, the teams can choose different type of fuels to compete with. The fuel categories include, Diesel, Gasoline, Hydrogen, Battery Electric, Solar and Gas to Liquid.
Building the Car in AUS
Due the excellent facilities provided by mechanical engineering department, the AUS Team was able to perform all tasks in the AUS manufacturing lab. The lab is equipped with CNC machines and has all the required technology to build the complete car in AUS premises. The team has named the car Eco-Stallion.
AUS and Environment
Fundamental reasons for building a highly efficient vehicle are to reduce the carbon footprint on the environment. This is because Mother Nature is wrapped in an intricate web of environmental systems that are connected to each other. Apart from designing a car that intakes the least amount of fuel, the team also ensured that the vehicle is environmentally safe. Therefore, the team came up with an idea of designing the shell (body) of the car using recycled paper. With a dogged determination and perseverance to play a positive role in saving the environment. The team was successful in building a recycled paper shell that has a high structural integrity. The benefits of using recycled paper are that it saves energy by reducing the need to extract and refine paper, conserves natural resources by reducing deforestation and decreases the greenhouse gas emissions. As a result, the AUS team was successful in designing a car that is fuel efficient and eco-friendly.
