Television viewers across western Connecticut received real-time coverage of local and statewide results in the Nov. 6, 2012 elections provided by a crew of more than 40 Western Connecticut State University students and faculty members who presenedt a four-hour live election-night broadcast from the Charter Communications Cable Access Studio in Newtown. Innovative use of smartphones and social media were integral aspects of the production and live program.
Produced by Associate Professor of Communication & Media Arts Dr. JC Barone, the “Election Connection 2012” program brought together a WCSU team of six faculty members and two students as anchors delivering up-to-the-minute coverage of presidential, congressional and state legislative election results from 15 western Connecticut cities and towns in Fairfield, Litchfield and New Haven counties. The broadcast, airing from 8 p.m. to midnight Nov. 6 on the Charter network’s CommunityVision Channel 21, was also simulcast on WXCI-FM 91.7 and video-steamed live online on the university homepage, wcsu.edu. Featured were reports from headquarters of the U.S. Senate and Fifth Congressional District candidates as well as the Office of the Secretary of the State.
The technical crew coordinating the program was headed by Barone as Executive Producer, media arts major Brittany Nisco as Producer, and media arts graduate Kevin Jones as Director. Other media arts majors with key roles in the production crew were Billy Smeriglio, as Associate Producer; Natalie Napolitano, Assistant Producer; Steve Marucci, as Social Media producer, Billy Trotta, as Remote Feed Producer, and Andrew Piechocki, as Chief Sound Technician.
