The Memorial Song is one of seven presented by the Cankdeska Cikana Singers from Spirit Lake Nation--a Sioux drumming and singing group--at the Rauschenberg Project Space on W. 19th Street in New York. They were part of an exhibition called SONGS FOR SPIRIT LAKE, which included six artists who made work in response to their experience at Spirit Lake. I'm Mary Lucier, the video artist, and my piece was to shoot the group from an extreme overhead vantage point, projecting that footage live in the mezzanine space creating a large "mural" with the drum at the center. The sound is powerful, and the performance, highly focused. There's more to come!
