On May 17, 1980, performance artist Richard Newton checked into the derelict El Dorado Hotel in downtown Los Angeles. The performance took place in a small room with only Newton, two stuffed rabbits and a stuffed bear sitting around a table. Viewers took turns peering into Newton's world through the crack between the door and jamb, being held secure by a common chain lock.
