How do you get to know the personality of a racehorse? By watching very closely, and asking those who know them best. Based in a stable in the South of Ireland, HORSES follows three charismatic equine athletes over the course of 9 months as they meticulously prepare for national hunt races: gruelling trials in which twenty or so thoroughbreds gallop over a grass course of several miles, often leaping (or attempting to leap) over obstacles 4 ½ or more feet high. Will they win or lose? Do they care? What happens when they fail? Trainers, exercise riders, and an equine masseuse, along with unusual observational footage and an experimental soundtrack, work together in an attempt to begin to convey what it might be like to be a horse. For the Irish Film Board, BBC/Storyville, & RTE. Available on DVD in the UK.
