Getting close now I think to a 'base' effect. This is still just one material on a standard mesh (back of a Suzanne head). The rest of the effect would come from smoke sim and some particles for added embers and licks of flame.
The idea of the fire material/setup is to quickly block in a fire effect and then see what needs to be added per shot / object / etc.
