This animation shows measured global temperature (relative to the 1961–1990 average) from 1850–2013 for 5° grid maps in the background (left: 1 year running mean, right: 3 year running mean) and as global means in the foreground (red lines). Technical details of this visualization:
Met Office Hadley Centre
HadCRUT4 (Version HadCRUT.188.8.131.52, 24.5.2013)
Data set details:
Spatial resolution is 5° (500km), 1 vs. 3 year running mean, monthly data from 1.1850 – 3.2013, gray areas are missing values (or length of consecutive data per grid cell is smaller than size of running mean). Note that the considerable size of gray areas throughout the time series is a consequence of this conservative treatment of visualizing missing data. Therefore, other strategies to visualize missing data are possible. For further technical information about the data set see metoffice.gov.uk/hadobs/hadcrut4/faq.html.
