What do you do? It’s a seemingly trivial question we’re all regularly asked.
For women experiencing unemployment, it is a question they dread. It strikes at the very core of the insecurities that go hand-in-hand with being out of work. Being unemployed can strip you bare, making it hard to keep a sense of optimism and motivation for the job hunt.
More than 350,000 women are currently registered as unemployed in Australia.
As worrying as this figure is, it does not include the 70% of part-time workers in Australia who are women. More than half (58%) of those women will tell you that they are underemployed and in need of more work. Interviews can be daunting for most of us, but some women have additional barriers to overcome. They may be a single mother, be exiting a domestic violence situation, experiencing homelessness, have a disability, or be grappling with other life challenges.
This is where Fitted for Work comes in.
Our mission is to help women experiencing disadvantage get work and keep it. Most women are introduced to our services through the personal outfitting and interview preparation service. A significant barrier for many women can be finding appropriate business clothing, and knowing how to present at interview. Giving these women interview coaching and a set of clothes which makes them look and feel terrific has a massive effect on their confidence and self-esteem.
Fitted for Work doesn’t stop there. We also offer a range of mentoring, transition to work and career resilience programs. All our programs work simultaneously in developing a woman’s self-confidence and self-esteem as well as deepening the skills and knowledge to get work. Once we level the playing field, our women are able to get work and keep it – over 75% find a job within 3 months.
Thank you for being a supporter of Fitted for Work. You have helped us transform the lives of over 12,000 women since 2005. Please support our Annual Appeal this year by making a tax-deductable donation and help us eradicate poverty for women and children.
Our goal this year is to help another 3,000 women step out of disadvantage and gain the dignity and pride that comes from having paid work. It costs $1,000,000 every year for us to run our programs and services for women, and advocate on their behalf nationally. We need your financial support to do this. You will not only help us assist women in Australia get work, but also create a tangible impact for their family and community. Fitted for Work CEO Jane Hunt will send you a personal note thanking you for your donation. Your donation is tax-deductible and can be claimed this year if made before 30 June!
