The CHINA WALL is a WAVE --- and a big fat mean one too! I had the great opportunity to observe the Molokai 2013 Channel crossing race. This is a historic, romantic and a pretty tough race that is on the minds of most surf-ski paddlers. Its a rite-of-passage thing! RENE APPEL is one of Hong Kong's top paddlers. He has been an olympic class windsurfer and has trained HK's only Windsurfer Olympic medalist. He is a true strong water man. Wanting to do the Molokai myself one of these days, I volunteered myself to be on Rene's support boat. What an awesome experience it was. This part of the video gives you some idea of what the China Wall is--- we begin as the paddlers approach Portlock Point --- roughly 45K into the race, tired and exhausted...waiting for THE WALL!!
Please bear with me...it was hard to balance myself on the boat - I did not want to fall in there! SO the video is jumpy at times....the water was choppy and the 20ft Boston whaler was bobbing like a barrel in the sea. The hiss of waves and the roar of the China wall simply has to be experienced....I have only managed to give you a taste!! WELL DONE RENE-- AN fantastic 18th place amontgs the top 70-80- paddlers in the world!! Also a big Congratulations to Ueli Gweiner - also a great paddler from Hong Kong who was placed somewhere in the 25-27 place --really awesome!!
