Shouting Vallecas nuestro (Vallecas is ours) the neighbors of Vallecas district demonstrated against the local urban Partial Plans in 1976 in Madrid. They demanded the Town Council to take their needs into account in the future urban planning of the district. More than 25.000 protesters forced the public administration to expropriate large areas from the big owners to relocate more than 1.200 families who lived in shanties.
This would not have been possible without the help of the neighborhood associations set up in those days. These associations defended the rights of the residents of Vallecas. In the following years, other associations emerged in the district to stimulate education, communication, cultural activities, cooperative house building or local development.
The six organizations which I present here, are just a representative example of the large amount of associations that strive for people needs in this working-class neighborhood located southwest of Madrid (Spain).
