[ ** UPDATE** The piñata will be smashed on November 20, 2013 @ 8:30pm at El Museo as part of PERFORMA 13!! (elmuseo.org/event/takeabite/) ]
For El Museo del Barrio's "La Bienal 2013: Here Is Where We Jump" exhibition (opening on June 12, 2013), I made a piñata that looks and functions like a real disco ball, and I filled it with items that I collected from the artists in the exhibition. Titled "Breaking Bienal," this piñata contains: objects that relate to the artists' work in the show, artifacts of their artmaking process (like material remnants, test objects, etc.), and even some special pieces that they created just for my project! During most of the exhibition, my piece will operate on a motor with pin spotlights, just like a regular mirror ball reflecting light around the room. After a few months, the public will be invited to come and smash my shiny, celebratory object, putting all the artists’ contributions up for grabs.
