In May of 1968, the submarine USS Scorpion ( SSN-589) was lost at sea. One year later, a task force from San Diego, California transited the Panama Canal and went to the site of the Scorpion's loss, where the deep-diving bathyscaphe USS Trieste II (DSV-1) made numerous dives to gather evidence as to the cause of her loss. These are some photos taken during that time by the task force navigator and executive officer of the USS Apache (ATF-67), Lawrence "Lorenzo" Hagerty.
