In May of 1968, the submarine USS Scorpion ( SSN-589) was lost at sea. One year later a task force departed San Diego, California, transited the Panama Canal, and after a brief stop in the Azores Islands, went to the site of the Scorpion's loss to search for evidence of the cause. These are some photos taken during the ocean crossings by the task force navigator and executive officer of the USS Apache (ATF-67), Lawrence "Lorenzo" Hagerty.
