On Sept. 27, hundreds of hotel workers and their supporters gathered in San Francisco's Union Square at a rally organized by the Unite Here! Local 2 union, to demand a new contract that guarantees basic benefits including health care and increased wages. Unite Here! represents hotel workers such as housekeepers, food servers, and bellmen. The contract, which expired in mid-August, affects about 9,000 workers employed in more than 60 hotels. Union organizers and members say hotels can afford to improve hourly wages and benefits because they are still reaping profits despite the economic recession.
