Hito Steyerl is a filmmaker, publicist and a theoretician; lives in Berlin, Germany. She works on issues of migration, cultural globalization, post-colonial criticism and political theory. Hito Steyerl created three works for DOCUMENTA 12: Red Alert (2007), a three part video installation; Lovely Andrea (2007), a film essay; and Journal Nr.1 – An artist’s impression (2007), a video installation.
In 'Journal Nr.1 – An artist’s impression' (2007), Steyerl reconstructs a scene showing the alphabetization of Muslim women from a 1947 Bosnian monthly news reel, which was destroyed in 1993 during the last Bosnian war. Many of Steyerl’s films revolve around a fundamental dilemma “ ..... you need images, you need documents, because they tell about facts, they establish facts; we need facts in order to establish some sort of communication.”
