Lots of people complaining (online at westseattleblog.com) about traffic issues in West Seattle. A 100' section (yes, one-hundred feet) of Avalon Way between Fauntleroy and 35th was re-striped to include bike lanes on both sides. This allows continuation of bike lanes already in place on Avalon.
The road configuration here went from 5 traffic lanes (2 lanes westbound, center turn lane, 1 lane eastbound and 1 turn-only eastbound from Avalon to southbound 35th) to 6 lanes (2 lanes westbound, center turn lane, 1 lane eastbound, 1 bike lane eastbound, 1 bike lane westbound). Traffic here has always been a problem, even before the bike lanes were put in and the turn-only lane taken away. But people "feel" the bike lanes are causing more congestion.
There is only one lane of traffic feeding either side of this section on Avalon. So more lanes would not do any good for cars. I literally count more people riding bikes here than cars using that turn-only lane.
This video shows that the signal seems to be causing the backup of eastbound Avalon traffic, wrapping all the way around to Fauntleroy. I only counted 6 cars getting through before the light turned red! This sucks.
