Twins Alex and Andrew were born at 24 weeks and together they weighed 3.5 pounds. At one week old, doctors felt that Alex was not going to make it and his parents were told to say goodbye – but the moment Alex was placed on his mom’s chest, he stabalized and so his parents took turns holding him continuously for days. Once Alex was stabalized, Andrew started showing signs of needing help. Andrew required many surgeries, and was faced with blindness, paralyzed vocal chords, and possible hearing loss.
At just over four months old, Andrew passed away in his mother’s arms. 12 days later, Alex was discharged and allowed to go home – with oxygen and a feeding tube. A few months later, doctors found a large tumor on Alex’s kidney, and in a successful surgery, both the tumor and kidney were removed.
Today, Alex is happy and healthy – he has just recently finished at all of his Stollery clinics.
