nightwatch is a series of stolen pictures about the streets of Jo'burg and it's buildings.
All shot on a digital stills camera, the video is a stop action animation of these stills.Documenting what happens at night, when town becomes deserted by the visitors of the daylight. These daylight denizens who sometimes come trawling back in slow moving cars to view and perhaps sample the wares available on the street.
Cold steel women greet them with a cajoling yell of “hey sweetie”, then turn around and flash some ass. Mostly cellophaned in tight pants. But sometimes the ass is bare, chicken fleshed by the cold. So some, knowing what they want, having a familiarity with the corner, stop and a woman will saunter over and chat in that age old tradition, since the invention of the Ford, leaning over an open car window and negotiate the price. She may if it is to her liking, get in and drive away to get him off.
There are the all night hawkers, there to provide food sustenance to the night citizens. Not making much sale as conversation and play.
Zooming in and zooming out, a quick hop off and the detritus is gone, the garbage men whistling and banging on the truck, not willing to go quietly into that good night.
Saturday nights God comes back to town, carried in by faithful followers in uniform. Zionists set up shop in an empty schools and for the next 12 hours see the godless time out with praise & worship. Spinning, chanting, whirling dervishlike, steaming up the windows until the sun comes home.
The public domain of the streets sets the voyeur’s stage, the intersections and uncurtained windows the frames.
