BEETHOVEN AND BEYOND, Grinberg Classical Salon Series,
236th Salon, recorded live on October 6th, 2021
Carl Philip Emanuel Bach (1714-1788) was the second oldest son of J. S. Bach and a bold and prolific composer who exerted great influence on Beethoven and brought about a revolutionary change of style from the Late Baroque to Early Classical Period. Forward-looking, he also anticipated the music of the Romantic Era with his signature Empfindsamer stil, which was filled with extreme emotional contrasts and characterized by very spontaneous twists and turns in melody, harmony, tonality, rhythm, texture, register, tempo and dynamics. His riveting and rarely-heard Sonata in G minor for violin and keyboard, H. 542.5 (ca. 1734), formerly attributed to his father, J. S. Bach, showcases both players as equal partners and features three contrasting movements: a rousing Allegro, spun out of many gorgeous sequences, a bucolic Adagio in E-flat Major, and a tempestuous Allegro finale, which anticipates Beethoven's Sturm und Drang style.
