"A Portuguesa" is the contemporary anthem of Portugal. It was composed in 1890 with lyrics of Henrique Lopes de Mendonça and music by Alfredo Keil and was used early as a patriotic symbol.
The video "Google Translator recites A Portuguesa" (2013), is the literal use of the Google transtor without correcting the spelling. It’s the Google translator voice that we ear in this recitation without any intervention of the author. The use of tools of reading is not a novelty in the production of contemporary art. We can remember, for example, the use of computers to create poetry in the late '60s and early '70s. The issue here has to do, therefore, not by the use of new media but by our excessive dependence on these “cold tools” in which we blindly trust.
The video is, thus, a reflection on how viewers relay on theses tools and, consequently, in which errors can arise.
