If interested, this is San Francisco Opera's version of the Oppenheimer aria, sung by the same guy. I think I prefer the orchestration and conducting of the New York production (above), but favor the staging/direction of the San Francisco production (shown here). What do you think?
For those who have seen, or ever do, the videos of both productions, I will say that I think the New York production had an overall better stage design -- though, not in this scene -- while the San Francisco production had far more sophisticated and controlled staging. This makes sense since the New York production was directed by a newcomer, her first staging of a live opera, whereas the San Francisco production was helmed by veteran opera director, Peter Sellars (who, incidentally, collaborated on the writing of this opera -- he provided the libretto for John Adams to put to music. Meaning, Sellars wrote original verse, adapted real transcripts from interviews with the actual scientists at Los Alamos into verse, and compiled sections of two classic poems for use in two key scenes, the Oppenheimer aria being one of them).
