Once Upon a Dream is a surrealist film I created while referencing a poem I had written many years ago about an old rocking chair. I really wanted to emphasize the rural elements of the areas where I shot these clips. Often my actual dreams involve walking to a location without knowing the location or never arriving at the final destination. I wanted to emphasize this aspect of my dreams by showing the figure walking different or similar routes from varying viewpoints.
The film is mainly about the memories, the meditative walking, and the various images and sounds that might stand out about certain experiences or dreams as you remember them later. There is no real location or feeling I want the viewer to take away from this video, it is more about the experience they have while watching. I do however reference the end of the dream, the day, and life by including clips of sunsets, decaying houses, and the graveyard at the end of the film.
All of the sounds are either natural sounds I collected while on location, from soundjay.com, and the music was a free download* I had from a few years ago. The music does have some special meaning within this project but not enough influence to actually go into here. It is primarily to manipulate the viewer’s emotions, while viewing and listening to the soundtrack at the same time.
