Many of you know me as a writer, but I am also a teaching artist. I work for Community Word-Project, an organization that sends poets and artists into the New York City schools, to reach kids in underserved communities who may not otherwise have access to the arts. For 12 weeks, I taught 1st graders in a dual language program in Washington Heights. Please watch my short, amateurish video for more on these kids! I gave them simile, sensory details, Langston Hughes, and rhyme; they gave me salsa and bachata. At the culmination of the residency, the kids received a CD and printed anthology of their work: six songs, three in English and three in Spanish, magnificently produced by Sebastian Cruz, my musician teaching partner.
