Burlington has undergone considerable change in its first century of existence. From the sound of steam engines, to the bull from which some say it got its name, to the modern and progressive City it has become. Residents of Burlington, North Carolina can revel proudly in its past and look forward with anticipation to a bright future.
Let’s take a journey back in time to Burlington, North Carolina over its first 100 years. The town, originally known as Company Shops, was the midpoint of the rail line between Charlotte and Goldsboro. The North Carolina Railroad found the location most advantageous for providing support in the form of maintenance and repairs for the trains.
Inside the train station, now called the Historic Depot, is a mural covering all four walls, painted by artist Rodney Moser. It depicts many significant events that occurred in the City during its first century of existence.
