Arte Útil in Spanish roughly translates as useful art, but also suggests art as a device or tool. Arte Útil imagines, creates and implements socially beneficial outcomes.
The Arte Útil Lab is the first part of a year-long investigation initiated by the artist Tania Bruguera that includes an online archive, an association of Arte Útil practitioners, an open-call, a publication, and a series of public projects and debates culminating in the transformation of a building at the Van Abbemuseum in the Netherlands into the Museum of Arte Útil in the fall of 2013. Pedagogical Projects (Free Schools, Education, Mutual Aid), facilitated by TradeSchool.coop and The Forum Project
Trade School is an alternative, self-organized school that runs on barter. Trade School is for people who value hands-on knowledge, mutual respect, and the social nature of exchange. We believe that everyone has something to offer. The Trade School network is made up of self-organized barter-for-knowledge schools across the world. Started in 2010 by Caroline Woolard, Rich Watts, and Louise Ma, Trade School has spread to over 50 cities internationally. Trade School New York is currently organized by Or Zubalsky, Caroline Woolard, Christhian Diaz, Rachel Steinberg, and Aimée Lutkin.
The Forum Project (TFP) uses creative tools to create change by educating individuals and communities on important social issues and providing them with tools to combat the oppression. We use critical education, Theatre of the Oppressed and other creative techniques and provide opportunities for individuals and communities to explore, challenge themselves and others, and deconstruct power while having fun in a collaborative and interactive environment. Through workshops and performances we promote critical thinking, dialogue, personal growth, transformation and action.
