My musical "OUR Gettysburg" began eighteen months ago with this poem. As I was researching a screenplay about this Mennonite farmer at the Battle of Gettysburg, I was invited to submit lyrics to a friend of a friend performing as a folk singer. When she rejected "Waiting For The Other Shoe To Fall" I began to think about how I could incorporate it into the screenplay. Then came "Evergreen," a finale number if ever I heard one, not for a story about the farmer, though. It was to be a musical about the battle.
