Balto describe themselves as a "folk collective based in Portland, OR." A highly skilled group of young musicians, would also appropriately describe Balto. The band centers around the writing and singing of front man and lead guitarist Daniel Sheron and mandolin player and harmony vocalist Andrew Sheron. Balto was formed when Daniel Sheron returned from a self imposed exile in Siberia by way of Moscow and the songs document the people and stories he collected on what can only be called a truly existential experience. Not coincidentally, the name Balto comes from the legendary Siberian husky that led the dog-sled team from Nenana to Nome Alaska to bring serum to the town which was experiencing a diptheria outbreak in 1925. The songs on the band's latest release Monument are dark, introspective poetry from a songwriter of considerable talent and a band, rounded out by the rhythm section of drummer Sam Budish and bassist Charlie Fruendlich, that has taken these songs and wrapped them in crafty, well executed arrangements, bolstered by tight harmonies. For those who like smart, well produced, well played indie acoustic rock...Balto will find a legion of fans.
