We are trying to raise awareness about hedgehogs through documenting a small number of the rescues that come into us, sometimes hoglets, sometimes releases other times bad news stories with a message.
This is exactly one of the latter. This hedgehog has just been admitted & although an otherwise perfectly healthy hedgehog it has one major issue. A badly fractured jaw & snout.
This will undoubtedly have been a gardening / gardening work accident, probably a spade judging by the ridgeline on its snout & if it is as bad as it looks to me on initial examination this hedgehog will have to be put to sleep.
An otherwise perfectly healthy hedgehog that will not get to see another night because somebody didn't a few minutes checking for wildlife before starting work.
Please, always check for wildlife before carrying out any work in the garden.
The hedgehog after going under for examination was found to have a badly fractured jaw, bone shards in the nasal passages and damage to the snout. It was euthanized at approximately 3.30pm.
