A Walk in the Clouds

When talking about our trips to southern Bolivia, I always refer to them, as true expeditions, adventures where anything can happen making you embrace exploration and discovery. Uyuni and the highlands are like no other place in the planet. Remote, somewhat unreachable, but full of magic and mother nature’s gems. Hours of dusty roads will take you into the highlands where challenges and wonders await you. Working at 3 miles high, is to say the least, a test of endurance and concentration, every step a trail every breath a miracle. The crown jewel of this area is Laguna Colorada or Red Lagoon, a magenta tinted body of water surrounded by volcanos and inhabited by thousand of Flamingos that provide a surreal vision of this body of water. Lagoons, volcanos, deserts and wonderful fauna dominate this desert paradise.

The salt flats in Uyuni are a vision of heaven, literally. In the afternoon, massive thunderstorms move into the horizon providing a true reflection of heaven on earth. Any and everywhere you look you are surrounded by clouds and better yet, you can walk on them. A 3am excursion will reward you with a perfect echo of millions of stars in the still and shiny water. Mornings are cool and crisp, not a breeze, perfect for a mirrorlike rendition of the perfect sunrise.
