July 6th 1935 - April 12th 2013
Don Backe was the founder and directory of Chesapeake Region Accessible Boating (CRAB) located in Annapolis, Maryland. The volunteer organization brings sailing to physically and emotionally disabled individuals in the Chesapeake Bay area. Don was paralyzed by a severe auto accident 25 years ago. Prior to his accident, Don was an avid sailor. After his accident he found he was able to sail with some assistance and decided to make the sailing experience available to others with disabilities. The result was CRAB.
We filmed this interview with Don in 2012 as part of our documentary about Matt Rutherford, a young sailor who Don mentored and inspired to take on a solo, non-stop voyage around the Americas, in part to raise money for CRAB. Matt completed the 311 day voyage last April, which raised over $200,000 for CRAB.
