The Great Gatsby visual effects created by Cameron Crichton at Iloura in 2013
The vfx team at Iloura were responsible for populating the 'valley of ashes' sequences. We had a team of six people generating fume grids and then each member created layouts for a particular sequence which covered a specific area of the environment. These layouts also had to coordinate with adjoining and overlapping areas, taking note of wind direction and existing smoke in the plate of each shot. These are most of the forty odd shots that I was responsible for turning around in the space of a few weeks. Background model elements were rendered in Maya Vray by the lighting team and we combined them with our Max Vray renders in Nuke.
The flashing sparks visible inside the background Smelting building were generated by me with Thinking Particles setup by Vasilis Antipas.
