The Influenza Virologic Surveillance Sample Size Calculator B allows the user to answer multiple questions relating to rare and novel influenza viruses. Firstly, it helps states determine an appropriate sample size to detect a rare event/novel influenza virus among influenza positive surveillance specimens tested in all states at a low enough threshold for effective intervention and control measures. This objective relates to the initial detection of a novel virus which generally occurs as part of routine surveillance. Investigation of a novel event after initial detection (the "deep-dive") is a separate objective and addressed by using Calculator C.

Calculator B also helps states determine an appropriate sample size to detect antiviral resistance virus among influenza positive surveillance specimens tested in all states at a low enough threshold for effective intervention and control measures.
