The moment we were commissioned to design merchandise for music label Electric Deluxe and musician/DJ Speedy J, we decided that whatever we would design, it should be based on experiment.
Soundwaves see that music from the musician reaches the listener. We thought it would be great to actually send the designs of the T-shirts and the bag via sound. This is what we have done, and in cooperation with Interaction Designer Martijn Mellema (wekillbombs.nl), we have built an installation that does that exactly. An image is sent pixel by pixel in morse-code from one computer to another, which 'listens' with a microphone. One great detail appeared to be that, however hard one tries, one always gets a form of noise. This becomes visible in unpredictable, but very welcome glitches in the image. After this digital process we thought it would be great to then produce the designs with the analogue process of screen printing.
