The first of a series documenting the WWII wrecks of Savo Sound - also called Ironbottom Sound, after the number of ships sunk during the fierce fighting of the Solomon Islands campaign.
USS Kanawha AO-1 was the first purpose-built fleet oiler in the US Navy. She was launched in 1914, and sunk in 1943 after a Japanese aerial attack started an uncontrollable fire. Her wreck sits upright in 60 metres off Tulagi Island.
