I/O è altro (http://www.cesarmeneghetti.net) is a multimedia project that the artist Cèsar Meneghetti developed with more than 200 people with special abilities taking part in art laboratories organized by the Comunità di Sant’Egidio in Rome. This whole process was divided in four different phases (which the artist names “verificas”): “verifica 1” concentrated on the spoken word and consisted in a “video-cabina” where the various protagonists talked freely about key-concepts such as life, death, disability, love, the other… The “verifica 4” was the “body- and silence counterpart” to “verifica 1”: here, instead of words, the performers would speak about the same key-concepts above mentioned with a physical expression code. In a few short workshops, César Meneghetti and Cristina Elias have developed a lexicon without words that only uses the body. They compared their own bodies with the disabled persons’ and based the construction of the body/movement alphabet on the principle of equivalence and diversity. The movements of the two artists and of the people involved, acting on an equal footing in the same environment and within the same exchange, have created a performance that went beyond the movement limitations of its participants. With this alphabet, everyone seems different from him/herself and the performance actions modulated by the senses put everyone on the indistinguishable edge of normality.
The work In-visibilità, by depriving all the performers of sight, has made them all equal in the lack of a sense. This zone of in-visibility paradoxically helps people see. This installation is being currently exhibited at the 55th International Art Exhibition - La Biennale di Venezia.
