Conidia is an interactive video of the growing of fungus. The conidia are the asexual spores of the mold and fungus that replicate themselves, and that allow the fungus and the mold to expand so fast. By moving the mouse vertically or horizontally, the corresponding movements of the growth of the fungus appear: when moving the mouse horizontally, the fungus expands laterally, when moving the mouse vertically the fungus grows in height. Two variations are given for each direction of movement, each of them happening on one half of the screen.
Associated to the visuals is a background atmosphere music, that gives the feeling of being deep down, into something mysterious and unknown. The whispering is associated to the idea of multitude, how these spores come together and expand, almost in secret without one noticing, like a subtle whisper. Two different forms of whisper are associated to the different forms of growth: an individual whisper when one or three spore appear, and a collective whisper when the multitude appear in the horizontal movement.
The interactive app is for artistic purposes, showing the beauty, and delicacy of something (mold) that we normally find so repugnant.
This version is made with videos taken from the internet (see references).
I am currently working with a biotecnologist to produce new images of growing fungus.
