On July 3, 2003 I was fortunate to travel to Europe for the first time. It was an approximately 8 week long research trip, that took in England, Czech Republic, but ostensibly Germany where I researched both German Expressionist Cinema and what is known as 'Krautrock'. This documentary is a result of a fan's journey through the country that spawned the music, speaking to some of the protagonists, collaborators and fellow fans there and in the UK and Czech Republic. This documentary was completed in its current state in 2006 and has not been widely seen. For the 10th anniversary of my first European visit and the initial production, I will post it here online, split into chapters, over the next few weeks.
Chapter 2 takes in Berlin and previous interviewees make reference to specific Berlin bands such as Tangerine Dream, Cluster, Agitation Free and the impact that the city had on artists such as David Bowie and Iggy Pop. Also interviewed is Berlin-based engineer and producer Harris Johns speaking about his experience with early Einsturzende Neubauten sessions.
