The east side of Rochester, NY contains five neighborhoods referred to as the "Fatal Crescent". This semi-circle area has high rates of homicide, crime, and poverty, and a high concentration of transient residents.
Kenny Mitchell grew up inside the Fatal Crescent and has known nothing else. On April 9, 2012 at age 23, Kenny and his best friend Lawrence Richardson were shot next door to Kenny's house while walking home from the corner store. Kenny was hit with three bullets, but was able to make it up the stairs of his house to safety. Lawrence died on Kenny's front porch trying to make it up the stairs.
When Kenny recalls his favorite memories in his life, they always include Lawrence. Kenny refers to him as his brother. They met through Teen Empowerment, a nonprofit organization that hires inner city youth to give speeches about the situations they grew up in. Kenny and Lawrence had a similar life story and once they met they spent almost every day together.
Since Lawrence's death, Kenny is battling a drug and alcohol addiction, became homeless, and was incarcerated for five months. He continues to live inside the crescent.
