Shanghai Roots & Shoots, a Shanghai-based environmental nonprofit, has began its second iteration of the Million Tree Project in Inner Mongolia. From 2007-2012, the group succeeded in planting one million trees in a desertified area of Inner Mongolia, and in April of 2013, they started in a new location.
As much as one third of China's territory is desertified or threatened by desertification. Some experts question the effectiveness of planting trees, but Roots & Shoots remains confident that they are making a difference.
