What’s “Mentor Wonders” about?
The play follows experienced volunteers and new recruits for a mentoring program in a bilingual public school on San Antonio's Westside.
During their Orientation meeting, school staff members explain how the program works. Folks introduce themselves, and veteran mentors share stories about activities they shared with mentees. This dialog is interrupted several times by “dreamscapes.” These are poems about mentoring combined with music and cloud images. They act like music video interludes during a boring meeting.
"Dreamscape" poems can be found here (times approximate):
8:15 - “If Walls Could Talk” - Poet Dreamer
13:38 - “Messy Business” - Poeta También
21:29 - “Age Difference” - Poeta También
25:45 - “Laces Rule” (more finished-looking) - Poeta También
39:44 - “Locked, Loaded, Dreadfully Drilled” (more finished-looking) - Poet Dreamer
54:44 - “Missing Piece” - read by poet Cat Lee with pianist Aaron Price
During the meeting, an AMBER Alert sounds, upsetting everyone, but especially those in the room who realize that the abducted child is a mentee they know. This dire situation eventually resolves. Both the boy and his mentor see positive outcomes.
Work-In-Progress video screening - What is that?
This video was recorded during online cast rehearsals. I edited many weeks’ worth of footage to generate a version of how the play's action unfolds. Actors in their correct roles read all their lines. The visuals are rough, though, not much like the final video will be. It’s work-in-progress, as far in character development and planning for the final video as we’ve gotten so far. I’m still writing the script and seek reactions to help make the story more puro San Anto.
