On Jeff's boat 'Haulin Ash' with Jeff, Daniel, and Dr. Clay. Between dives while Daniel was fishing, sharks were hitting hooked fish as he reeled them in, and came to the surface at the back of the boat. I thought, I have tons of footage of sharks with us while we're on the bottom spearfishing, but I don't have any of sharks feeding. So I grabbed my GoPro, a mask, (forgot my snorkel) and slid in the water off the back of the boat.
Daniel thought it was funny to swing the fish carcass that the sharks had stripped over and try and bounce it off my head to get the sharks right in my face. But I gotta say, it worked as far as getting some great footage.
Was pretty intense seeing them open there jaws and tearing up the carcass right in front of my face, so much that I had tunnel vision, and was only focused on one shark. After a while when I realized by the guys on the boat's comments that there were actually 2 sharks swimming around me, agitated and displaying aggressive behavior, that was enough excitement for me! I decided I would be more comfortable back on the boat
I should have grabbed a snorkel too so I didn't have to keep popping my head out of the water, but oh well. The water clarity was terrible on the surface that day, so as the video isn't the clearest for on the surface, plus bobbing up and down in the waves on the surface made for shaky video, which I tried to correct with my editing software's video stabilization, witch does work in some cases, but makes for a "rolling blur" in some of the scenes.
Still, turned out all right, and on a a day with better viz, and less waves, I'll grab a snorkel and get in with them again and get some better footage for another video. Next time I'll get a little bolder. See what it takes to actually get one of these things to bite ya :) Hope you enjoy!
