New trailer for the launch of the Special Edition "As Cinzas de Deus" DVD, now available on Amazon.co.uk
The film was released theatrically in 2003.
"As Cinzas de Deus" is a visual poem in a universe of realities.
Set in the ruins of an abandoned, once grandiose city in Brazil, the film follows a woman returning to a world of memory and feeling, where ‘trapped souls’ are living and re-living moments from an unspecified past.
In search for answers and completion she penetrates their dream-like reality, absorbs them, challenges them, releases them. Their memory bank gradually erased, they disappear into the ether.
In a climactic finale she confronts her own personal nemesis. She survives the life-and-death confrontation, and, left behind, she dances alone, immersed in dust and eternity.
"As Cinzas de Deus", the first feature-length physical theatre film shot in Brazil, merges the languages of cinema and dance. Inspired by Metamorphoses (Book I), Ovid’s classic poem about birth, death and continuous transformation, the choreography was created specifically for the camera by Fernanda Lippi, founder of Zikzira Physical Theatre. Directed and produced by André Semenza, "As Cinzas de Deus" was shot by award-winning Director of Photography, Marcus Waterloo.
The film features a cast of Brazilian dancers: Heloisa Domingues, Marise Dinis, Tuca Pinheiro, Ricardo de Paula and Jaqueline Gimenes.
The film was edited by Simon Sykes; Sound Supervisor: Glenn Freemantle. Re-recorded at Pinewood Studios by Brendan Nicholson. Costume design: Marney Heitmann.
The soundtrack was mixed by arguably France's premier producer, Kid Loco.
Time Out (London) Critic’s Choice:
“Stupendous...striking. A sizzling, beautiful and visually sumptuous feature film. The performance embodies the teachings of spiritual theatre giant Grotowski”
