Christmas Birrimbirr (Christmas Spirit) is a three screen video installation collaboratively created by Miyarrka Media. The project focuses on one extended Yolngu family’s embrace of the joys and sorrows of Christmas. From the tears of sadness triggered by the rumble of the first thunderclouds in October, through the decorating of homes and graves with lights and tinsel, Christmas Birrimbirr introduces viewers to a vision of Christmas infused with stories, images and practices from a world created by ancestral beings and actions. The Christmas Birrimbirr exhibition offers an extraordinarily rich and challenging engagement with contemporary Yolngu creativity and identity-making.
Miyarrka Media is a collective of artists, performers, media-makers and cultural leaders. Miyarrka Media was co-founded in Gapuwiyak in 2009 by Paul Gurrumuruwuy, Fiona Yangathu Wanambi, David Mackenzie and Jennifer Deger.
