Black History Month Learning Project – “I Double Dare You!”
This September we are launching a new learning project about Black History and Identity in honour of BHM. The outcome will be the creation of the school’s first ever BHM showcase. This is the short film I’ve made for our year 7 pupils to be used during Stage 2 of the learning project.
Stage 1 – Citizenship skills (advocacy, debate and negotiation)
All KS3 pupils will spend 2 lessons looking at diversity and identity by taking part in a series of carefully facilitated Philosophy 4 Children discussions. Pupils are expected to cover a wide range of controversial topics such as ‘Stop and Search’ Islamophobia and the use of racial language in modern culture.
Stage 2 – Citizenship Knowledge:
Year 7 pupils will then expand on this learning by exploring the political and historical impact of Carnival here in the UK and globally. Pupils will learn about the history of Notting Hill Carnival and consider how it is portrayed in the media and whether it is still achieving its primary aim of unifying different cultures.
Our year 8 pupils will examine the roots of Black protest music and consider its relevance in today’s’ multicultural Britain.
Year 9 pupils work directly with our partner school in India to explore the role of the Empire and to learn about the contribution India has made to the UK.
Stage 3 – Real outcomes -The Dare!
Pupils will be set the challenge of creating their own BHM showcase. Year 7 pupils will be dared to create their own Carnival Costumes while year 8 will be challenged with creating their own protest songs. Finally our year 9 pupils will tasked with collaborating with our partner school to create short Citizenship films themed on the global community. These amazing projects will be showcased in special BHM assemblies and shared with our Partner school via our website. Pupils will also be tasked with negotiating with our local primary schools with a view to performing for their children as well.
I hope you enjoy the film, my team will be sure to upload more clips as the project progresses.
