When I received a call for submissions by the Prelinger Archive to create a short video using archival video from their online files, I made Monster Movie. I mashed up archival video of the aftermath of Hiroshima with clips from a Yongari, a 1960s B movie.
I read somewhere that B movies became a prolific genre in post-atomic Japan as a way to transfer the terror of the atomic bomb to something that was intentionally not human. It would seem far too much for the human psyche to accept that humans did this to other humans. The real monster is the one who has, through propaganda, miseducation, nationalism and racism, somehow found it possible.
